National Federation of Rural Cooperative of Indonesia (INDUK KUD) is the largest agricultural and shery cooperative organization in Indo- nesia and the world. Founded in 1973, the cooperative consists of 13 million members from 9437 branches across 27 provinces in Indonesia. It has more than 60 million family members in the organization, which is about 25% of the country population.
INDUK KUD’s mission is to help the co-operative movement expand joint business relationships, ensure creation and implementation of a business climate that supports co-operative expansion and development. It provides education and training for the farmers, initiate sus- tainable rural development and improve the livelihood of the rural communities.
The cooperative also assists in creating new market opportunities for its members to market the agriculture, sheries, livestock, plantation, mining, forest and crafts products domestically and internationally.
The rural communities in Indonesia is facing with challenges related to access to basic services, economic opportunities and technology. The vulnerabilities of the rural communities to the economic crisis, poor rural infrastructure and water shortage must be addressed to allevi- ate poverty.
In order to nd the solution, INDUK KUD’s board committees, supervisors and managerial departments have been working closely with a voluntary team of scientists, researchers and industrial experts, led by Mr. David Wu (Wu Jui Lang), the Secretary General at The Overseas Representative O ce of INDUK KUD.
After a few years of working in the project, our Chief Researcher, Dr. Chung Tsai Wang (Chief Research of Chung Yuan University of Taiwan) and our team has successfully developed and implemented a comprehensive farming strategies and also developed the new integrated shery and agricultural technology that is applicable in the rural areas of Indonesia, which have insu cient supply of water and electricity.
We believe that the Belt and Road Initiative will strengthen the cooperation opportunities for Indonesia and China in sectors of food and agriculture. As China focuses its investments in South East Asia for regional food security, the two sides will conduct cooperation in a wide range of areas, including science and technology exchange, technology demonstration, agricultural trade and investment and international food and agriculture a airs.
The future planning of INDUK KUD is to establish a holistic approach and strategy to promote long term growth and sustainable develop- ment for the agriculture of Indonesia. The rst phase of setting up a training and education center with plants which is built in accordance to the standards of commercial production is underway. It is an important component to ensure the agriculture and shery products are in compliance with international food and agriculture standards. This initiative will gradually be extended to all INDUK KUD branches in Indo- nesia in the future.
